Downstairs, parents’ house, poets snoring loudly. Then, off to the bus to roust Bill for the drive into the middle school.

Tyler and Blake did a little street corner busking and then we headed in to meet what seemed like the most attentive, entusiastic twelve year olds in the world.

These attentive twelve year olds wrote a song called “This Squirrel is Your Eyebrow” and though you can’t quite make it out from this recording, I want you to know that in twenty years it will be on all the classic rock stations, replacing “Dust in the Wind” as the new prairie classic.

Ahem.

This squirrel is your eyebrow
This tofu is my tongue
From the grocery store
to Northern Iceland

Then, we travelled on to the high school and did an erasure project as well as some collaborative poems, all of which were fabulous.

I’d like to apologize to the young man at the high school whose hair I made fun of. Like George W. Bush, sometimes I try to be funny and end up just being an asshole.

Many thanks to Susan Mills (my mom), Jane Stanaforth, Joe Brecki and Darin Johnson for helping out, and to all the students in Ames who taught us quite a bit in our morning there.
