Day 29: Philadelphia UPDATE! More from Philadelphia! Philly Sound!

**** On the way into this fair city, Major Jackson told me never to say &;Philly.&; &;It&;s like saying &;nawlins&; when you&;re down South,&; he said, &;you just sound stupid, like a tourist.&; Taking his advice I will tell you about our trip into Philadelphia without once saying the word Philly except, of course, when I&;m talking about a female horse under the age of three. There once was a female horse under the age of three. She went to Temple, had broken glass shimmering in her coat, and had a blog. She hosted the Poetry Bus reading at her amazing ex-Real World house cum art gallery called the F.U.E.L. Collection in Old Town. The female horse under the age of three had done an excellent job getting the word out to her friends and compatriots (she had a lot of help from the singular Will Esposito), so a ton of great people showed up to this reading. All of these great people were very patient and into the whole affair, despite the fact that the Eagles were playing a Monday Night Football game down the way and the reading itself went on longer than might have been expected. We didn’t tell this female horse under the age of three that the inimitable Kenward Elmslie might show up because we didn’t want to disappoint the horse (she&;s prone to stomping and kicking fits when she doesn&;t get her way), but show up he did and off to the musical races he went with renditions of “Girl Machine” and “Sleepy Pete,” both of which were wonderful (one of which you&;ll find below). The female horse under the age of three neighed once and stamped her foot. &;Celery is crisp!&; she said and I couldn&;t have agreed more. Then Ish Klein, Dorothea Lasky Molly Russakof, Tom Devaney and CA Conrad all gave exceptional readings, and Major Jackson and Thomas Sayers Ellis gave farewell bus tour readings that were stunning though sad since both the horse and I wished they would stay on the bus for longer. I fed the female horse under the age of three whiskey and one Tampico bomber rolled with my hooves. She nuzzled my neck and nibbled my mullet. At the end of the night, we said goodbye to this female horse under the age of three and traveled on into Maryland so we wouldn&;t have to wake up at the butt crack of dawn to make it to the Naval Academy by noon. The female horse under the age of three was a pleasure to meet, and I hope to spend more time with her in the future. 060.jpg 061.jpg 062.jpg
